What we do
In the challenging south of Madagascar, Androy region, there were no shelters for women, no welfare services, and no place for women and girls affected by violence, rape, and child marriage to turn to. In January 2025, we opened the first women’s shelter in the country, a safe, warm, and respectful place, operated entirely by us, local women of TERATANY.
First Women's Shelter in Madagascar A Safe Haven in the Androy Region
Our Ongoing Work
At the shelter, we provide:
24/7 physical protection and security
Emotional support and personal guidance
Literacy classes for women and girls
Personalized rehabilitation programs for each woman
Referrals to medical and legal services
Educational and social activities for the children of survivors.
Since opening in January 2025, we have welcomed dozens of women and girls, including their children, who have all received support from us in a safe and respectful environment.
Our Supportive Community
🤝Once a week, in the shelter’s hall, we host gatherings of dozens of women and members of the local community who encourage and support one another.
The meetings focus on employment guidance, promoting entrepreneurship, and building economic independence.
Women who have experienced violence join the group and gain a genuine opportunity to rebuild their strength.
Beyond Protection, Building a Future
We quickly realized that protection alone is not enough.
To break the cycle of violence and poverty, we create real opportunities for women to achieve economic independence and education.
We are currently developing an initiative that will include:
An Employment Center for single mothers
A Technology Campus for young women high school graduates
Both projects will share the same space, offering a holistic environment for recovery, learning, and building tools for financial independence, all operated by us, local women of TERATANY.
The center and campus will offer:
Vocational training in various fields
Technology and English studies with a strong focus on AI tools
Entrepreneurship development
Support for starting small businesses
Assistance in finding jobs with fair wages
Financial literacy and household management skills
Looking Ahead
Our vision includes:
- Establishing additional shelters and employment centers across the Androy region
- Reaching the most remote villages with a vehicle adapted to the harsh, roadless terrain
- Identifying women who receive no assistance at all and bringing support to them
