About us

Who we are

We are a team of women-led changemakers working every day to protect, heal, and empower girls and women in southern Madagascar.
We believe that safety, education, and economic independence are not privileges;  they are rights.

In the photo above: the inauguration of the Blue House (Ny Trano Manga), the first women’s shelter in Madagascar.)

Our journey began in January 2025 with the opening of the first women’s shelter in Madagascar, an urgent response to the crisis of rape, child marriage, and gender-based violence, often met with silence.

In a place with no real alternatives, women and girls simply had nowhere to turn.
While social services existed, beyond filing a complaint, there were no practical solutions.

From this urgent need, a broader vision emerged.
Alongside physical protection, we began offering emotional support, literacy classes, and rehabilitation programs, all led and implemented by local women.

Now we are stepping into the next chapter:
The creation of a Livelihood Center for single mothers and a Technology Campus for young high school graduates.

Our goal is to break the cycle of violence and poverty through education, entrepreneurship, and hope.

From survival to leadership.
From shelter to opportunity.
We walk with every woman, every step of the way.

TERATENY Team

Mamy Duata

Director of TERATANY NGO and Manager of the Women’s Shelter “Ny Trano Manga”(The Blue House)

Mamy’s life story is both an inspiration and a driving force behind her work.
As a Malagasy girl born into a poor family in southern Madagascar, she was forced to leave school at a young age and start working.
Her adult life, too, was marked by hardship, gender inequality, and the daily struggles of survival.
But instead of giving in, she chose to fight.
Mamy turned her pain into purpose.
Today, she leads the first women’s shelter in Madagascar for survivors of rape, child marriage, and domestic violence.

Since the shelter opened in January 2025, she has already helped dozens of women and girls, and many more still await her support.

Later in life, with remarkable determination, she completed her high school diploma.
Today, she is leading real change for women in southern Madagascar.

Our approach

Our Mission
To empower women
and girls in southern Madagascar

not only as those in need of protection,
But as a leading force for social change.

TERATANY was founded to address a critical gap
In response to gender-based violence.
In a region where there were no shelters,
no long-term support,
and no clear path out of violence.
We chose to act.

🏠 What We Do Today

We operate the first women’s shelter in Madagascar,
led entirely by local women.

Beyond physical safety, we provide:

  • Emotional support

  • Personal guidance

  • Literacy classes

These services create a foundation for dignified healing.

🌱 Looking Ahead

But we soon realized —
Protection alone is not enough.

We are currently developing an integrated initiative that includes:

  • An Employment Center for single mothers

  • A Technology Campus for high school graduates

Both programs will share the same space,
offering a holistic environment for personal and economic growth.

💼 Why It Matters

Our goal is to equip women with:

  • Practical tools for financial independence

  • Vocational training

  • Technological skills

These will enable them to enter the workforce,
create new opportunities,
and build a stable future for themselves and their children.

The campus will also offer:

  • Social support

  • Applied education

  • Access to essential resources

All grounded in the understanding that

True independence begins with safety, capability, and belonging.
Our Vision
From the first women’s shelter in Madagascar to the villages no one reaches We are building a future where every woman can live safely, earn a dignified income, and lead change in her community.

We envision a southern Madagascar where women and girls are no longer defined by fear, poverty, or silence.
A world where every woman, no matter her background, lives in safety, earns a dignified income, and builds her future with pride and independence.

🏢 What We Aim to Build

We plan to expand beyond a single shelter —
to establish additional shelters and employment centers
throughout the Androy region in southern Madagascar.

We aim to help hundreds of women:

  • Start independent businesses

  • Secure jobs with fair wages

  • Access long-term support and resources

🚗 Reaching the Unreachable

And not only in the main towns —
We are determined to reach the most remote and isolated villages,
where many women still live in complete invisibility,
without access to any help or services, and without anyone knowing what they are going through.

With a proper vehicle adapted to the harsh, unpaved terrain,
We will travel to these villages,
listen to their stories,
and offer a new path forward.

🌟 A Future of Possibility

This is a vision of:

  • Recovery

  • Rebuilding

  • Community-led empowerment

We will turn survivors into leaders
and nurture a new generation of women
Who will shape the future of southern Madagascar.

Only with your generous support and moral encouragement can we make this vision a reality.
